How do PayPal refunds work?
You can refund payments for up to 60 days from the payment date.
- Refunding the full amount
- If you refund the full payment, PayPal refunds the variable portion of the fee, but not the fixed fee. We debit the fixed fee portion from your PayPal account.
- For example, if the original payment was $100.00 USD, you pay only $97.10 USD of the refund and PayPal automatically pays $2.90 USD.
Here's how the refund is calculated.
Original transaction $100.00 USD PayPal fees $3.20 USD ($2.90 USD variable fee + $0.30 USD fixed fee) Original amount deposited to your PayPal account $96.80 USD 100% refund $100.00 USD Amount withdrawn from your PayPal account $97.10 USD ($96.80 USD + $0.30 USD fixed fee) PayPal refunds $2.90 USD (100% of $2.90 USD variable fee) The standard rate for receiving payments for goods and services is 2.9%. Your fees may vary.
- Refunding a partial amount
- If you refund part of the payment, PayPal refunds part of the variable portion of the fee, but not the fixed fee. We debit the fixed fee portion from your PayPal account.
- For example, if you refund half of the original payment of $100.00 USD, you pay only $48.55 USD, and PayPal automatically pays $1.45 USD.
